Tahoe Tribune Underreports TRPA
Today’s Tahoe Daily Tribune article “Taking Lake Tahoe To New Heights” is far from evenhanded. Taking Lake Tahoe to new heights: Development history in the basin | SierraSun.com. Are they talking about the new heights proposed in the code amendments to the Regional Plan? 72’ in town centers? Wouldn’t investigative reporting include comments from the numerous conservation groups with valid concerns about the direction TRPA is going? The folks that wade through hundreds of pages of County and TRPA spin?
TRPA’s complex code allows for numerous “transfer development rights”. Commercial Floor Area (CFA), 6,000,000+ can become Tourist Accommodation Units (TAU) at the rate of 300 CFA per TAU. That’s 20k potential TAUs. TAU’s usually end up as luxury condos. A 180 sf motel room can become a 6000 sf TAU penthouse (Boulder Bay). Is that capping development? TRPA can’t even give us a current accounting of development rights or enforce the BMPS required on existing development.
