Cronyism Puts Tahoe at Severe Risk
A polluted, congested, overdeveloped Lake Tahoe serves no one. Yet, that’s where we’re headed if serious changes are not made to the 55-year-old agency charged with Lake Tahoe’s safekeeping.
Mission creep, coupled with a lack of rigorous oversight or routine external scrutiny, has bred cronyism and regulatory capture. Law experts sum up the latter this way: “Capture arises when private interests exert an outsized influence over the very agencies that are supposed to keep them in check.”
