Another ‘branded’ luxury housing complex and resort is coming to Tahoe. Residents aren’t happy about it.

Ever since the Tahoe Biltmore Lodge & Casino was purchased by EKN Development Group, promises to turn Crystal Bay’s abandoned buildings into a “branded marquee destination” has only resulted in public backlash and confrontation from full-time residents.
In January, EKN presented Tahoe’s Crystal Bay and Brockway residents the latest plans for the luxury resort and high-end housing project, which is currently known as The Resort at Tahoe and Residences (RTAR), the Tahoe Daily Tribune reported.
The development group, which spent $56.8 million for the property, essentially promises to build a resort in a town that lacks basic affordable housing – ultimately making it impossible for workers to service the resort. (This is in part due to skyrocketing housing prices driven by the pandemic and the recent influx of tech workers, resulting in restaurant and retail workers being forced to relocate to cheaper areas.)
